Technique: Origami/Kirigami (Fold and cut or tear)
Sheets used: A square, any size; it may be best to start with a larger square so you can feel the crease lines more easily. Once you are familiar with the steps, smaller squares make nice small Basic Baskets.
You could use thick paper or thin cardstock for stronger baskets.
Description:
This model is a fairly flat basket with a straight bottom with sides that slope outwards a little and at the top, a sloped handle that ends in a sharp point. One side of the basket is smooth while the other side will show a motif of 3 triangles where the side folds meet each other and overlap across the center of the model.
It is loosely based on the traditional Origami Cup. The basket can be left flat, or it can be filled with small items, that will transform it into a 3D shape, of course.
Use as decoration for special occasions, e.g. on a Christmas tree.
Also as treat bags for parties, as pockets on a bulletin board or in a scrap book.
Instructions
Step 1
Place the paper down on a hard surface with the points at the top, bottom and sides or in a diamond shape.
Step 2
Fold the left point over to meet the right point. Crease and unfold.
Step 3
Fold the bottom point up to meet the top point. Crease and leave folded to create a two-layered triangle.
Step 4
Fold the top points of the triangle, both layers, straight down to meet the middle of the bottom edge. Crease and then unfold.
Step 5
Fold the right point of the triangle to the left and a little upwards so it lines up with the horizontal fold you created in the previous step.
Form a neat corner on the right of the figure. Note that the point will not reach all the way to the left, only about three-quarter of the way.
Step 6
Bring the left point to the right and upwards in a similar manner, also lining the fold up with the horizontal crease mentioned previously. Crease and unfold.
Step 7
Your triangle should once again look like it did in Step 3, with the long, folded edge nearest you, but now it will have 3 crease lines added, namely a horizontal line at the center of the triangle and two diagonal lines on the sides.
Step 8
Now, fold the entire triangle in half by bringing the right point over to meet the left.
Crease and leave folded.
Step 9
Notice that the front surface of your triangle will currently be divided into 3 main parts, namely an irregular four-sided shape and 2 triangles.
Part A is the four-sided shape at the bottom right of the overall figure.
Part B is the triangle to the left of the four-sided shape.
Part C is another triangle, situated just above the four-sided shape.
Your cut will be made only in Part C.
Step 10
Focus only on Part C, at the top of the overall shape for this step.
To create a fold line for the cut, fold the top point of Part C over and down all the way so it points toward the right, almost like you are folding the beak of a bird.
Put in another way, the left edge of Part C should meet with the bottom edge of Part C.
Make a strong crease and then unfold so you can feel the line you will use to cut.
It will run diagonally from the right edge to the left bottom corner of Par C.
Step 11
The cut will be made from the right, folded edge of the triangle towards the left and a little down until you almost reach the bottom corner of Part C.
Important: Even though the line you have created will run all the way to the left bottom corner of Part C, you should stop just before you reach this corner, so that you do not cut too far, in which case you will not end up with a handle for your basket, but simply with a lop-sided triangle.
Step 12
Once you have made the cut, open the triangle so it is once again two-layered, with the closed edge nearest you.
Step 13
Refold the bottom right and left points inwards along the left and right creases already created.
The left point will lie on top of the right.
Step 14
Find the slit you have cut near the top of the figure and separate the paper along this slit.
Depending on how you made your cut, the slit may be pointy, like a sharp corner, or it may be slightly rounded.
Notice that the small shape you have created has two layers.
Step 15
Separate the layers and fold one layer down towards you, as far as the paper will allow.
Crease well and leave folded.
Step 16
Turn the model over sideways and repeat the previous step on this side.
Step 17
If all went well, you will end up with a sweet little basket which you can now open by separating the two handles.
