Since some origami models require some more unusual shapes like pentagons and hexagons, it is helpful to know how to create these shapes.
This tutorial will help you create a pentagon shape. This is achieved by starting off with a square, making some folds and then making a single, straight cut with a pair of scissors.
What you will need:
* A square of around 15 x 15 cm
* scissors
Instructions
Step 1
Place your square down on a flat surface with one of its edges parallel to the edge of the table.
Step 2
Fold the bottom edge up to meet the top edge so you have a two-layered rectangle.
Step 3
Fold the bottom left point of the rectangle, both layers, diagonally up to meet the top edge.
Make a light crease or just a pinch mark at the center of the diagonal edge you have folded up.
Then unfold.
Step 4
Similarly, fold the top left point of the rectangle, both layers, diagonally down to meet the bottom edge.
Make a light crease or just a pinch mark at the center of the diagonal edge you have folded down.
Then unfold.
Result: Towards the left side of the rectangle, you should feel a mark where the two previous creases cross.
Step 5
Next, take the bottom right corner of the rectangle, all the layers, and fold it diagonally upwards so the corner point comes to rest exactly on the mark just mentioned.
Hold the paper down in this position with one hand and with the other, make a strong crease along the bottom right edge of the figure.
Result: The left side of the shape will have two layers with 90 degree corners.
The right side will have an irregular four-sided shape that seems to lie on top of the original rectangle.
Step 6
Now, take the same corner you have just folded upwards and bring it back towards you so the left edge of the four-sided shape will line up with its bottom edge.
Result: The left side of the figure will still be rectangular in shape while, on the right side, a structure will have formed resembling an ice-cream cone. The cone will lie as if it is slightly slanting to the right with its right side also forming the edge of the larger shape. Above the cone shape, at the top right corner of the figure, the "scoop" of ice-cream will protrude just above the top edge of the shape.
Step 7
Now,take the left, bottom corner of the shape and fold it over so it aligns with the first edge you encounter. This will be the left side of the cone shape.
These two edges should lie as close to each other as possible, creating a neat, sharp corner nearest you.
Crease well and leave folded.
Result: There will now be a triangle on the left with the cone shape unchanged on the right.
Step 8
Flip the shape over from left to right, making sure the sharp point is still nearest you.
Step 9
Fold the figure closed by bringing the left edge over to meet the right edge.
Result: You will end up with an even narrower cone-shaped fold, with a point nearest you and various layers and points making up the opposite end of the figure.
Make sure the slanted edges of the figure are matching on both sides.
Step 10
To find the line we will be cutting along, start at the point nearest you and slide your finger away from you, until you find a diagonal fold line that will slope upwards to the left.
This is the line nearest to the bottom point of the shape.
Step 11
Now, starting from the right edge of the figure, make a single, straight cut across the shape, snipping off the entire top part of the figure.
Step 12
You will be left with a folded, multi-layered triangular shape. Make sure all the corners of this shape is sharp and neat. You especially want to check that the corner on the top left, where you ended your cut is as straight as possible.
It should not be slanted in any way.
Step 13
Gently open the triangle all the way and press it flat.
Your perfect pentagon is ready for use.
