HOW TO FAN-FOLD A SQUARE INTO 5 EQUAL SECTIONS

These are instructions on how to make and use a folding template for fan folding a square into 5 equal parts. You will need a square of paper the same size as the square(s) you want to fanfold into 5 equal segments.

Part 1 - Making the template
1. Position the square paper with the corners pointing right, left, towards you and away from you.
2. Make a diagonal crease by folding the bottom corner up to the top corner, crease and unfold. You now have a horizontal crease running from the left corner to the right corner.
3. Fold the top right edge down to the center horizontal crease, and crease. You now have a narrow triangle above the horizontal crease. Unfold so the square is again in the diamond position. You now have 2 creases on your square:
a. One goes horizontally from the left corner to the right corner.
b. The new crease starts at the right corner and runs up and to the left to end along the top left edge of the square.
4. Fold the top right edge down to the crease closest to the edge. This is the crease you made in the previous step.  Crease and unfold. You now have 3 creases on your square:
a. One goes horizontally from the left corner to the right corner.
b. Above the horizontal crease is the second crease you made that starts at the right corner and runs up and to the left to end along the top left edge of the square.
c. The third and newest crease is above the second crease you made. It starts at the right corner with the other 2 creases and runs up and to the left to end along the top left edge of the square at a point that is between the second crease and the top corner.
5. The distance between the end of the third crease and the top corner of the paper is 1/5 of the length of the paper.
6. Fold the top corner down along the top left edge, and the right corner down along the bottom right edge. The folded piece of paper will be a long skinny rectangle running from the top left edge to the bottom right edge and is equivalent to 1/5 of your paper. Leave this folded.
7. Your template is finished.

Part 2 - Using the template
1. Position the template so that the folded skinny rectangle is vertical along the left edge of the template and is the top layer of paper.
2. Insert the square of paper you want to fanfold into the template, so it is between the 2 layers of paper that make up the template. You should find the skinny vertical rectangle from the left edge of the template laying on top of the square paper you inserted into the template.
3. Fold your fanfold square from right to left so that its right edge touches the right edge of the skinny vertical rectangle, and crease.
4. Now the right edge of your square is the crease you made in the previous step. Bring that right edge of your square over to the left to line up with the right edge of the skinny vertical rectangle, and crease.
5. Slide your folded square to the right to remove it from the folding template.
6. Flip the paper over from right to left like turning the page of a book.
7. Fold the right edge over to the left edge and crease. Now you have a tall skinny rectangle made of 5 layers of paper.
8. You will need to adjust your folds so that you end up with a 5-segment fan folded square.
