Folding level: Easy/Beginner
Steps: 11
Paper to be used: Rectangular, any size; consider using gift wrap, colored construction paper or even newspaper for this model.
Description: This is a rectangular gift bag that is open at the top. It has a double-layered band that stretches all the way around the top edge of the bag
At the back, the band comes together in two adjacent corners that may be left square or may be tucked in to form triangles.
Step 1
Place  a rectangle, color side up, on your work surface in portrait orientation, with the short edges at the top and bottom.
Step 2
Bring the top edge down to meet the bottom edge.
Make pinch marks on the left and right side of the top, folded edge and then unfold.
Step 3
Bring the left edge over to meet the right edge
Make pinch marks on the left side, at the top and bottom of the paper. Unfold.
Step 4
Fold the top edge down to meet the pinch marks from Step 2. Leave folded.
Step 5
Take this same edge and fold it upwards again to meet the top edge of the model.
Result: There will be a two-layered band that has formed along the top edge of the rectangle.
Step 6
Turn the paper over from left to right to reveal a rectangle with a smooth surface on the other side.
Step 7
Fold the left and right edges inwards, so they meet the pinch marks from Step 3.
Put in another way, fold in the sides so they meet each other at the vertical center of the model.
Leave folded.
Step 8
Now, bring the bottom edge upwards so it meets the top edge.
Make a strong crease along the bottom edge of the paper and unfold.
Step 9
Using the crease just created, fold the bottom edge up again, but this time, tuck it in under the two flaps at the top of the model.
Press flat.
Step 10 (optional)
If preferred, you can fold the two loose corners at the top of the model to the inside at a 45 degree angle, using a mountain fold.
It may help to first make two diagonal valley folds and then turn these folds into mountain folds, flippig the loose points of the flaps so they come to rest on the inside of the model.
Step 11
Turn the rectangle over for a last time to reveal the front of your gift bag.
You can punch small holes near the top of the bag and thread cord or ribbon through them if you would like for your bag to have handles.
Note: Once you know the basic folds for this easy gift bag, you can vary the size of the band at the top and also the width of the bag when folding in the sides.
