MDL0063 - ORIGAMI - BALLOON BOX OR BAG (FROM A SQUARE)

Text-Only Instructions
Credits and Resources:
This box is based on the traditional cube or dice.
Steps 1 to 8 are instructions for the waterbomb or balloon base.
Small variations are made from Step 9 onwards to modify the cube or dice into an open box or bag.
This is likely to be a traditional model.
If you are aware of any other source where this model or similar might be listed, please let me know so I can reference it under this heading.
Paper to be used: Square, any size; use large paper to practice with at first.
Folding level: Beginner to Intermediate
Steps: 20
Description:  This is an inflatable 3-dimensional model. The end result can either be turned into a box or shaped into a model that looks more like a bag.
The model will have high sides with an opening that tapers slightly inwards. Two of the sides have triangular flaps while the other two sides are smooth.
See Step 19 for forming the box and Step 20 for shaping the bag.
Remarks:
This box or bag works great as a Christmas decoration or to hold party favors, candy or similar treats.
When using as treat bags, just keep in mind that the opening of this box or bag will be quite small.
Use colors like silver, gold, red, green or blue and tie lightly with matching ribbon to hang the boxes or bags from a tree or around the house.
Use thicker paper or thin cardstock for a sturdier mmodel.
If you are using two-sided paper, make sure that the side you want for the outside of the model is facing up before you start to fold.
NOTE:  This model starts from the waterbomb or balloon base. If you are able to achieve this without instructions, fold the base and then go to Step 9.

Introduction to Folds and Bases Used in Origami
Step 1
Place a square of paper on your work surface and position it so that the edges are facing up and down, left and right.
Step 2
Bring the top edge down to meet the bottom edge. Crease and unfold.
Step 3
Bring the left edge over to meet the right edge. Crease and unfold.
Step 4
Turn the square over and position it so that its points are facing up and down, left and right.
Step 5
Bring the left point over to meet the right point. Crease and unfold.
Step 6
Bring the top point down to meet the bottom point. Crease and leave folded.
Step 7
Grasp the left and right points of the resulting triangle and push inward. The model should collapse along the pre-existing folds. The result will be another triangle shape that has one folded flap sticking out from the back of the model and another sticking out from the front.
Step 8
Fold the front flap to the left and fold the back flap to the right so that your model will lie flat.
The model will have one open end, which should be facing you.
Step 9
Next, grasp the left bottom corner of the triangle, top layer only, and fold it upwards to reach about three-quarters of the way to the top.
Make sure the edges are aligned on the left side of the model.
Step 10
Repeat with the bottom right corner.
You should now have two small triangles on top of the larger triangle with an open space at the center of the paper.
Step 11
Turn the model over and repeat Steps 9 and 10 on the other side.
Make sure that your folds and edges match on both sides.
Step 12
Fold the left and right points of the diamond shape towards each other so that they meet on the center vertical crease line.
Make sure they are both lying straight with their points touching.
There should still be a triangular space between the folded points after this fold with only the top points touching.
Step 13
Turn over and repeat on the other side of the model.
You should now be left with a flat, six-sided shape.
Farthest away from you, at the top of the model, will be a triangle, while just below it, you will have two triangles that mirror each other with their long sides forming the outer left and right edges of the model.
The last area, nearest you will resemble a triangle shape with a flat part at the bottom of the model.
Step 14
With the fingers of one hand, Open the left side pocket slightly while grasping the loose triangular flap at the top left of the model with the fingers of the other.
Fold this flap downwards and tuck it inside the opening of the pocket below it.
 Press flat.
Repeat with the right flap.
This step can be tricky to accomplish. Take your time and do not be afraid to open the triangles at the sides of the model a little to make things a bit easier.
Make sure the top triangles are neatly tucked in as far as possible and crease well.
Step 15
Turn over and repeat folding and tucking in the two flaps on the other side, like you did in the previous step.
You should have a five-sided shape with a point at the end farthest away from you and a flat edge nearest you.
Step 16
Next, fold down the top triangular point as far as it will go and make a strong crease. Unfold.
Step 17
Turn over and repeat this fold on the other side. Unfold.
These folds will create the bottom of the box or bag.
Step 18
Pick up your model. The pointy end will be closed.
Find the flatter, open end. Hold the model lightly by the sides and pull apart slightly while blowing forcefully into the open end to inflate the box or bag.
Step 19
To form the box, press the bottom flat from the inside and shape the sides of the model carefully by pinching the edges and corners as needed.
Step 20
To make the bag, after inflating the model, shape the bottom by pressing it inwards just enough so that it can still stand and will keep its 3D shape.
Then slightly flatten the model by pressing the two sides with the triangles towards each other. They will collapse inwards leaving the smooth sides to form the back and front of the bag.
Attach ribbon or twine to serve as a handle to keep the bag closed or use small pegs.
The bags can hang from a tree or, if not flattened too much, can stand by themselves.
