MDL0023 - ORIGAMI - BOX WITH BOW ENVELOPE

Text-Only Instructions

Credits and Resources:

This model has been folded by me without any external reference or resource.

If you are aware of any other source where this model or similar might be listed, please let me know so I can reference it under this heading.

Paper to be used: Rectangular, any size; A4, legal or copy paper is recommended.

Folding level: Intermediate

Steps: 12

Description: This is a flat, two-dimensional, square envelope, representing a wrapped box with a ribbon-like band and a bow at the top. If folded from two-sided paper, the actual envelope will be one colour, while the band and the bow, will be a different colour.

A small pocket will form at the bottom of the model, where a gift card or similar may be inserted before closing the envelope.

To open the envelope, insert a finger from one of the sides in between the two layers of the folded model and pull down.

Remarks:

This model can be used in scrap books, on top of gifts, for enclosing cards, notes, money, any small, flat object.

Using origami or other duo-colored paper will make this envelope even more eye-catching ...

Alternatively, a note can simply be folded into this model and decorated for a quick children's project or a personal touch.

If using two-sided paper, lay your paper with the patterned or colored side down before starting to fold.

The folded band and bow will be patterned or colored while the rest of the envelope will be plain or white.

Step 1

Place a rectangular piece of paper down on a hard, flat surface, with the short edges at the top and bottom or in portrait orientation.

Step 2

Fold the left edge over to meet the right edge. Crease and unfold.

Step 3

Fold the bottom edge up to meet the top edge. Crease and unfold.

You will now have one crease running from left to right along the horizontal center of your paper and another crease running from top to bottom, which will run along the vertical center of your paper.

Step 4

Next, fold the two top corners of your paper downwards toward the center, aligning the edges with the vertical crease line created in Step 2.

Crease well and leave folded.

The bottom of your paper will remain unfolded while the top flaps will have formed an arrow, pointing away from you.

Step 5

Fold an inch or so of the bottom edge of the model upwards to form a band of paper at the very bottom of the model.

Crease well and leave folded.

You will not have an edge or a fold line as a guide to position your fold for this step. Just do the best you can by feeling along the entire bottom edge of the model in order to ensure that your fold is as straight as possible.

One option might be to place a ruler along the bottom edge of the paper.

Then flip up the ruler and the paper once, creasing well to create a straight fold along the bottom of the model.

Another way to check your fold is to make a light crease and then pick up the paper, folding it in half with the band on the outside, as if you were going to fold a paper plane.

When the bottom band is folded in half it will be much easier to check and correct your fold if necessary.

Step 6

Next, flip your paper over, like turning the page of a book so that the folded band and triangles are facing the table.

Step 7

Fold the top point of the model down so it comes to rest on the horizontal crease line you folded in Step 3.

Crease well and leave folded.

Step 8

Next, fold the entire left side of the paper over to the right so it reaches just over the center vertical line of the model.

Crease well and leave folded.

Try to take your time with this step so that the sides of your envelope are as straight as possible.

Step 9

Repeat Step 8 with the right edge of the model, tucking the small band at the bottom of the envelope under the previous fold.

So, instead of just folding the sides of your model into the center, the first fold will overlap the center vertical line a little and the fold from the right will do the same, making it possible to tuck the band at the bottom right of the model into the band on the left.

Step 10

Turn your envelope over and if preferred, place a small gift, a note or gift card into the pocket at the bottom of the model.

Step 11

Bring the bottom edge of the model upwards, so it almost meets the top edge of the paper. Tuck in this edge underneath the band at the top of the envelope.

Crease well along the bottom edge.

Step 12

Lastly, fold the two loose flaps at the top upwards and outwards as far as they will go, and at an angle, to form the bow at the top of your gift card envelope.
