Hi there, I am Lindy, a visually impaired mum of two teenagers from Cape Town, South Africa.
I have had this blog for a while (actually since 2009), but have decided to make a few changes and start my posts from scratch again.
I will make this first post short and sweet. I hope to share with anyone interested, my love of and ideas and information concerning arts and crafts for visually impaired adults and children. I am not a teacher, but a totally blind mum, passionate about paper crafts, sewing, baking, macrame, jewelry-making - the list goes on - and I believe that crafts could and should be used extensively in the education and for the enjoyment of children and adults who are blind, visually impaired or who have other special educational needs.
For instance, just because we think of paper as a visual medium, meant for drawing, coloring and writing, does not mean that it cannot also be enjoyed by children and adults with visual and other special learning needs.
Paper is also a tactile medium; it can be folded, cut, crumpled, glued, weaved, and there are countless techniques and ways to use the myriad of craft materials that are available today to make representations and objects that are pleasing to the sense of touch and are thus accessible to and can be enjoyed by those with and without sight or learning difficulties.
Even though there may be many formal programs around the world to further the participation of blind and visually impaired adults and children within the arena of arts and entertainment, I am hoping to focus on ideas and resources that can be used by individual teachers, parents and caregivers and by visually impaired people themselves on a daily basis
to make crafts and creativity an enjoyable part of their daily lives.
I have been inspired by so many others, blind and sighted crafters, teachers and parents alike, who have used the Internet to share their passion and ideas with a receptive audience. You are welcome to share this journey with me.
Although I love to do many different crafts, origami has become my passion. Since I also love to write, sharing my experiences about origami will likely be a big part of this blog.
Please feel free to share any ideas and information you may have. you are welcome to contact me if you would like to help in any way.
